How to name your Roblox game: picking a title that works

Choosing a Roblox game name: say the genre, stay short enough for mobile, be findable in search, avoid trademarks, and when update tags and renames help or hurt.

Your game's name is the first thing most players read and the main thing Roblox search matches against. A good name tells players what they'll do, is easy to remember, and fits on a phone screen. A bad one is clever, vague, long or too close to someone else's. This guide covers how to choose one, and when to change it.

If you want a starting point, our free game name generator suggests original names from a genre and theme, and the title checker tests a name against the rules below.

Say what the game is

Players scroll past dozens of games. A name that tells them the genre and the hook earns a second look:

  • Genre words players already search for help: tycoon, simulator, obby, tower defense, roleplay.
  • The hook or theme makes it distinct: "Pizza Factory Tycoon" says more than "Tycoon World".
  • Concrete beats abstract. "Escape the Giant's Kitchen" paints a picture. "The Quest" doesn't.

A purely brand-style name ("Zorbix") can work for an established game with a big audience, but a new game rarely has that luxury.

Keep it short

On phones, game cards cut long titles off. If the important words are at the end, many players never see them.

  • Aim for something readable in full on a small card; around 20 to 30 characters is a sensible target.
  • Put the most important words first.
  • Read it aloud. If it's hard to say, it's hard to recommend to a friend.

Make it findable

Players often search for a game they heard about from a friend or a video. Help them:

  • Use ordinary spelling. Creative spellings ("Simulater", "Tykoon") make search harder.
  • Avoid symbols and emoji in the core name. They don't help search and can look cluttered.
  • Check what already exists. Search Roblox for your name. If there are already ten games with the same words, yours will be hard to find; add a distinctive word.

Stay original and safe

  • Don't use other games' names or trademarks, including names of films, shows, brands or famous characters. Besides being unfair, it can get your game taken down.
  • Don't promise what isn't there. Words like "free admin" or "free Robux" break Roblox's rules and attract the wrong players.
  • Keep it suitable for your audience and your maturity label.

Update tags: use them honestly

Many Roblox games add a tag to their title when they update, such as "[UPDATE]" or a short event label. Used honestly and removed after a while, a tag tells returning players there's something new. Problems start when:

  • Tags never come off, so they stop meaning anything.
  • Tags push the real name off the screen on mobile.
  • The update is tiny. Players learn to ignore tags that oversell.

Keep the tag short, put it where it won't hide the name, and take it down when the update is no longer new. Planning updates that bring players back covers announcing updates more broadly.

Should you rename your game?

Renaming can help a game that's struggling because its name is unclear. It can also hurt a game whose players know it by name. Before renaming:

  • Ask whether the name is the problem. If players who join leave quickly, the name isn't why. Check your first minute first.
  • Keep the recognisable part if there is one, and add clarity around it.
  • Tell your community in advance so they can still find you.
  • Log the date and compare a week before with a week after, using matching windows.

Names and the rest of the game page

The name works together with the icon, thumbnails and description. A clear name with a confusing icon still loses the click. See making icons and thumbnails that earn the click and how to write a Roblox game description.

  • No trademarks, other games' names or misleading promises
  • Update tags short, honest and temporary
  • Renames checked against retention first, announced and logged
